Rising coal prices, driven by supply disruptions from flooding in Australia and the South African energy crisis, has reignited investment interest in coal miners. Of the top 35 best performers in the mining sector in the past month 11 have interests in coal projects. Caledon (CDN:AIM) recently started commercial production in Australia, helping to push its share price up 44% to 42.25p in the period. Altona Resources (ANR:AIM) is up 54.8% to 6p after revealing talks with a potential Chinese investor who may provide much of the funding needed for a bankable feasibility study on its coal-to-liquids and power generation project in Australia. Petmin (PTMN:AIM) advanced 36% to 29.25p after growing earnings from anthracite production and attracting investment from a major financial institution.
