Pure South East Asian play Salamander Energy (SMDR) has had drilling success at the Tutung Alpha-1 well, located on its Bontang production sharing contract (PSC) in Indonesia.

Chief executive James Menzies said that the positive results indicate the potential for a commercially viable development. The group will now focus on exploring the multiple prospects in the offshore area of the PSC, over which it has recently acquired 3D seismic.

Elsewhere GFI Oil & Gas has encountered oil at its first two development wells at the Bualang field in Thailand. Salamander agreed a deal to buy the company in December.
