The fund invests in the shares of smaller UK companies, with the primary focus of achieving capital growth. Income is of secondary importance when choosing investments. The fund is a high-conviction portfolio of stocks where the fund manager believes good management can have the most impact on company earnings. The fund manager selects stocks based on their individual merits, focusing on company management, business growth opportunities and valuation of the shares, favouring trustworthy, diligent and understated management teams.
Garfield Kiff is manager of the M&G Smaller Companies Fund and co-deputy manager of the M&G UK Select Fund. He joined M&G in 2000 from PricewaterhouseCoopers as a smaller companies analyst. He was deputy manager of the M&G Recovery Fund from 2002 until 2008, and managed the Prudential Pooled Pensions Smaller Companies Fund between 2003 and 2008. Garfield graduated from the University of Liverpool with a first class honours degree in economics in 1996 and is a CFA charterholder.
Matthew Cable was appointed deputy fund manager of the M&G Smaller Companies Fund in March 2013. He joined M&G in 2007 and worked in several strategic and commercial roles before becoming a dedicated analyst in the smaller companies team in 2011. Matthew has a degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University and is a CFA charterholder.
