The fund is invested principally in the shares of European (including UK) companies that are deemed to be undervalued, with the aim of delivering income and capital growth over the long term (that is over five years or more). The fund manager employs a ‘value strategy’, that is, investing in cheap, out-of-favour companies whose share price, in his view, does not reflect the underlying value of the business. Stocks are selected on the basis of their individual merits, through a combination of value-focused screening and qualitative assessment. The fund manager seeks to construct a diversified portfolio of 60 to 100 stocks, with a typical holding period of three to five years.
Richard Halle joined M&G in 1999 as a sector analyst focusing on insurance. Since 2002, he has been managing various institutional mandates on a European value strategy, and in 2008, he was appointed fund manager of the M&G European Strategic Value Fund upon its launch. Before joining M&G, Richard worked as a security analyst for the Sedgwick Group. He graduated from the University of Natal in South Africa with a bachelor of commerce and is a chartered financial analyst (CFA) charterholder.
