Rio Tinto (RIO) said it will expand output from one of the world's premier bauxite deposits following approval of the USD1.9bn Amrun project in Australia.

Amrun involves the construction of a bauxite mine and associated processing and port facilities on the Cape York Peninsula in north Queensland.

The planned initial output is 22.8 million tonnes a year1, replacing production from the depleting East Weipa mine and increasing annual bauxite exports from Cape York by around 10 million tonnes.

Production and shipping are expected to commence in the first half of 2019, ramping up to full production by the end of the year.

The project's design provides options for future expansion to 50 million tonnes a year. The majority of capital expenditure for the Amrun project is scheduled for 2017 and 2018.

Stellar Diamonds (STEL) has formally submitted its application for a large-scale mining licence for the Tongo project to the National Minerals Agency (NMA) of Sierra Leone.

This application will be processed by the NMA and then forwarded to the Minerals Advisory Board (MAB) for consideration. The MAB, after its consideration, will then make its recommendation to the Minister of Mines for approval of the mining licence.

The final Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) report has been submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for consideration.

In order to complete the process with the EPA, public disclosure meetings will be held in the New Year both in the project area and in Freetown, after which the ESIHA can be approved by the EPA and the required environmental licence issued.

Anglesea Mining (AYM) recorded a net loss of £0.14m for the six months ended September 30 2015.

It will maintain its assets in good standing to permit it to take the fullest advantage of an upturn.

Petra Diamonds (PDL) has announced the recovery of a 23.16 carat pink diamond of exceptional colour and clarity from the Williamson mine in Tanzania.

The company says that the stone is an example of the high quality pink diamonds for which Williamson is known and is the most significant recovery by Petra from the mine to date.

Pink diamonds are only found in a handful of mines throughout the world and their rarity ensures that they are one of the most highly coveted of all the fancy colours.

The diamond will now be offered for sale by appointment in Antwerp as part of Petra's December tender process.

Orogen Gold plc (ORE), the AIM quoted gold exploration company, has updated the market on its recent diamond drilling programme at the Mutsk gold project in southern Armenia.

Preliminary interpretation suggests potential for new gold zones and extensions to the existing gold zone.

Colin Bird, chief executive of Orogen, commented: "I'm very pleased with the result for this end of season test programme. During the review the Orogen team concluded that the Mutsk Project had significant scope for growth, both in terms of tonnage and contained gold.

"Given the limited seasonal time available when we embarked upon this programme we are delighted with this interim result, which shows above average gold grades and has identified new zones. We eagerly await the results of the remaining holes and we will update shareholders as soon as we receive and analyse them."
