The Serious Fraud Office has today charged Barclays with offences which arose from capital raisings in 2008.
Barclays said it had been charged with:
- two offences of conspiring with certain former senior officers and employees of Barclays to commit fraud by false representations relating to two advisory services agreements entered into with Qatar Holding in June and October 2008
- one offence of unlawful financial assistance in relation to a $3bn loan provided to the State of Qatar in November 2008
Barclays said it was considering its position in relation to these developments and it awaited further details of the charges from the SFO.
Barclays said it had also been informed by the SFO that it had not made a decision as to whether it would also bring charges against Barclays Bank PLC in respect of the loan.
