- The prospect of summer disruption looms for Royal Mail PLC after managers voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action in response to a dispute over job cuts.

Union Unite on Wednesday said Royal Mail faces UK-wide strikes this summer over plans to remove 542 frontline delivery managers as well as plans to bring in ‘worsening terms and conditions’.

Around 2,400 mangers across 1,000 delivery offices voted 86% in favour of strike action. Unite said it will announce strike dates in the coming days and called on Royal Mail to return to the negotiating table.

‘It is no surprise at all that these workers have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action. Make no mistake, Royal Mail is awash with cash – there is no need whatsoever to sack workers, drive down pay or pursue this ill-thought out redeployment programme,’ said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.

Shares in Royal Mail closed down 5.3% at 268.30 pence in London on Wednesday.
