Vodafone Group PLC is in talks with Hong Kong’s CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd to combine their respective UK mobile operations, the Financial Times reported Thursday, citing ‘people with direct knowledge of the matter’.

Vodafone UK and Hutchison’s Three UK are the country’s third and fourth largest mobile networks, the newspaper noted, and this would be the latest attempt to consolidate the British mobile market.

The two largest are EE, part of BT Group PLC, and Virgin Media O2, a joint venture between Liberty Global PLC and Telefonica SA.

A proposed merger between O2 and Three was blocked by the European Commission back in 2016.

Vodafone shares were up 0.1% at 119.00 pence in London on Thursday afternoon, while the wider FTSE 100 index was down 2.0%.
