CleanTech Lithium PLC on Friday said it ‘welcomes’ comments made by Chile’s President Gabriel Boric in relation to the country’s lithium industry.

The Chile-focused sustainable lithium exploration and development company said it supported the focus placed on the sustainable development of lithium in Chile, adding that it also welcomes the mention of community relations and the need for private investment in the lithium industry.

‘These comments are in-line with CTL’s own strategy, for the sustainable development of lithium through direct lithium extraction technology, combined with renewable energy, in coordination with the local region and community,’ the firm said.

CleanTech noted, however, that Boric’s comments were regarding the Atacama salt flats, where the firm does not operate, and where lithium extraction uses a different process to that used by CleanTech.

The company said the Chilean government is expected to make a full statement on its plan for the lithium industry later on Friday.

CleanTech shares fell 16% to 46.10 pence each in London on Friday afternoon.
