Ondine Biomedical Inc on Monday reported its Steriwave nasal photodisinfection technology has been adopted by Penticton Regional Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, as a standard-of-care for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

The Vancouver-based life sciences company, which specialises in photodisinfection therapies, said that Steriwave employs patented technology to eliminate bacteria, fungi and viruses located on human tissues. It is already in use at a number of hospitals across Canada.

According to Ondine, one in nine hospital patients in Canada gets a healthcare-associated infection, which results in around 12,000 deaths a year.

Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Cross commented: ‘We are very pleased that Steriwave will soon be adopted as the standard-of-care for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgeries performed at Penticton Regional Hospital. It is gratifying to be working with Interior Health and this orthopaedics team, who are so committed to combatting the risk of post-surgical infections and keeping their patients safe against rising rates of antibiotic resistance. This also demonstrates Steriwave’s growing status as an effective alternative to topical antibiotics for infection prevention that easily fits into existing hospital workflows.’

Shares in Ondine were down 9.1% at 7.50 pence each in London on Monday morning.
