Ondine Biomedical Inc on Friday said its Steriwave technology is now available in hospitals across Canada, with Nova Scotia’s largest hospital becoming the latest facility to use it.

Shares in Ondine were up 10% at 8.00 pence each in London on Friday morning.

The Vancouver-based life sciences company said that Steriwave employs patented nasal photodisinfection technology to eliminate bacteria, fungi and viruses located on human tissues. Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Nova Scotia has now become the latest facility to implement the spray.

According to Ondine, one in nine hospital patients in Canada gets a healthcare-associated infection, resulting in around 12,000 deaths per year.

Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Cross commented: ‘It is hugely satisfying that Steriwave is now available in hospitals from coast to coast across Canada, giving patients enhanced protection against post-surgical infections. This new hospital deployment demonstrates Steriwave’s growing status as an effective alternative to topical antibiotics for infection prevention that easily fits into existing hospital workflows.’
