The Dow looked particularly sprightly as trading got underway today, with optimism returning on positive corporate earnings data, a rising dollar and an improvement in oil prices.
Shortly after the open, the Dow was up 0.65% at 23,425.95, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were little changed at 2,566.54 and 6,584.53, respectively.
WTI crude was 0.69% higher at $52.26 a barrel and Brent was up 0.38% at $57.59 per barrel.
Gold was down 0.25% at $1,277.7 an ounce and silver was down by 0.5%, while copper added 0.16%.
The Markit 'flash' US Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 54.5 in October, from 53.1 in September.
Meanwhile, the 'flash' US Services Business Activity Index increased to 55.9 (55.3 in September).
In addition, the Richmond Manufacturing Index reading is due later today.
