Wall Street started today's session in negative territory as oil prices weakened.
A mixed third quarter earnings season continues and investors remain cautious over the lack of progress regarding stateside tax reforms.
Shortly after the open, the Dow was down 0.16% at 23,519.78, the S&P 500 by 0.19% at 2,585.84 and the Nasdaq by 0.18% at 6,755.72.
European markets were mixed this afternoon, with the FTSE 100 up 0.11%, the DAX broadly flat and the CAC 40 down 0.29%.
Following the recent rally, WTI crude oil was 0.37% lower at $56.99 a barrel and Brent was down 0.47% at $63.39.
Meanwhile, gold was 0.78% firmer at $1,285.7 an ounce and silver was up 1.06%.
Copper was 0.7% higher.
Job Openings data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is due later today.
