ScS Group PLC on Friday appointed John Walden as its non-executive chair designate, as the company plans ahead for Alan Smith’s retirement next year.

Waldon will join the company board as chair designate on March 1, and will later replace Smith as chair of the Sunderland-based retailer of furniture and flooring, when Smith retires on November 30, 2023.

Waldon is currently non-executive chair of the Derby, England-based vehicle retailer Motorpoint Group PLC and SnowFox Topco Ltd. SnowFox is the investment company behind Yo Sushi in the UK and north America.

Previously, Wardon was chair of Naked Wines PLC and Holland & Barrett International, as well as chief executive of Argos Ltd and its parent company Home Retail Group PLC.

Smith said: ‘I am delighted that John is joining the ScS board and will, in time, succeed me as chair of the group. He brings deep board level expertise in both executive and non-executive capacities, has excellent consumer driven and omnichannel experience, and has led transformational and digital change, both in the UK and US.’

Shares in ScS were down 3.6% to 132.50 pence each in London on Friday around midday.
